In a regarding rom-coms, fairy tales, and social media hashtags like #relationshipgoals, it can be simple to idealize romantic relationships. But even though every relationship is unique, there are some common features that will help you inform whether the relationship is healthy. We spoke with polish women two therapists—registered psychotherapist Natacha Duke, MA, RP and Disputa Eshilian-Oates, LMSW, founder of Mind Physique and Spirit by DiLeonardo Wellness—to find out what they believe are some indicators that you’re in a healthful relationship.

A healthy romance is based on shared respect. Which means that you and your partner respect each other’s individual passions, needs, and boundaries. It also means that you don’t hold one another to a normal that may be impossible to meet—if, for instance , you’re not a fan of a particular music genre, that is certainly fine, but your significant other should not try to change your tastes to fit theirs.

Your partner as well shows interest in your life beyond the relationship and doesn’t assume that the well-being will depend entirely on them. They’re curious about your goals and dreams, and they really want to view you grow into the best type of yourself — not just the things you think they wish to see.

Finally, healthy lovers know how to discuss difficult topics and tend to be able to correct struggle without blaming or shaming each other. This can include things like money, fidelity, child-rearing styles, and more.
