Ignacio Gatica

Ignacio Gatica

Chile 1988. Lives and works in Santiago, Chile.

Ignacio Gatica has a special interest in languages. In several works such as “Hermiscambunalia” he had worked with notions of translation and giving new meanings to the language. During a residence he had undertaken in Colombia, his attention had laied down on the records covers from a Colombian label named “Discos Fuentes”. The artist adopted a material process with cement and with it he had copied the records covers, afterwards he built sculptures with that material. The artist adopts the same process when he had copied and altered the book covers from two important authors that conceptualized Neoliberal Economy, to name Friedrich A. Hayek and Milton Friedman. Those books were a neoliberal model for the political system adopted by Chile after the dictatorship.

Ignacio Gatica had showed his work in Chile, Argentina, New York and São Paulo. He has been an associate and co-founder of Popolet Foundation that its centre site is in Santiago, Chile. Among the shows he has participated we name: Hermiscambunalia (Book), Die Ecke (2014), New Media Bienal (2013), Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Menos lumens at Fábrica Itália (2013). The Contemporary Local Art Gallery in Santiago del Chile represents the artist. The show Andes in Brooklyn NYC (2009) and at the Museum of Contemporary Art Expo Sub 30 (2014), are among the most important shows.
